Where To StayI have literally stayed at every cheap hotel in Islamorada. I know them all and know them well. Naturally, you still want to stay at a place that is preferably waterfront and has as many amenities as you can afford. Good news is that these places DO exist. Here's my favorites.
Something people often don't know is that the Florida Keys (Key Largo to Key West) is over 100 miles. Many people assume that the all of the Keys is a far destination from any major city and that one must spend the money to fly into Key West. Not true. Key Largo and Islamorada are just a little over an hour from Miami International Airport (MIA) and around an hour and a half from Fort Lauderdale (FLL). Key West on the other hand is an extra two hours of driving past Islamorada. So if you are coming to Islamorada, you want to fly to MIA or FLL where flights are a lot cheaper.
This is perhaps one of my favorite blogs to write as I can for certain talk about how to enjoy a cheap trip to the Florida Keys. Why? Well, you see, I don't actually live in Key Largo or Islamorada anymore. I currently live in the Boston area which is where I was born. Back in grade school, my mom and stepdad wanted a change of pace and moved to Key Largo. So I lived in the Keys as a kid, graduated from Coral Shores High School and continued to live for years working in the restaurant business. Fast forward to today, I live in New England, have kids of my own and do business in Islamorada (see islamoradahalfmarathon.com). Plus, I still have some close friends who all live in the area that I enjoy hanging with. Therefore, I'm constantly going back and forth to Islamorada throughout the year for work or pleasure....but usually both. Considering I'm not the wealthiest person, it's important for me to travel on a friendly budget. This guide is for anyone who wants to visit Islamorada and wants to keep it on the cheap. I've got you covered.
